Sports massage and remedial massage in London

I have been treating injuries and tension patterns for over 30 years.

Did you know that most of us carry around a body full of tension? This tension is there because of daily use, nervous tension and exhaustion. The tension burns up our energy and causes sleepless nights. It makes us more prone to injury, illness and nervous breakdown.

A regular deep tissue massage rids us of these tensions, makes our life more enjoyable and dramatically improves our efficiency in everyday life.

Not only can I reverse general tension patterns but I can can also find the very specific areas which are involved in causing and maintaining pain. whether it is your neck, shoulders, spine or limbs, I can find and reverse the causes of your anguish.

Sports people

Sports people push themselves very hard. They must have special care to help their bodies to adapt and perform to their optimum level. Give me a call on 07925 616 753 to discuss your problem and I will see if I can help, or even guide you to someone in another specialisation who can help with the next step.

The number and types of treatment I give are tailored to your background physical condition as it changes during a treatment regime. If you have specific issues which are interfering with your training schedule, bring them to me. I am an expert in 'seeing into' the body. I will give you advice about how to recover more when enduring during periods of intensive training and much more. We may cover information on many topics and in many specialised areas e.g. Hydration levels, substance abuse, nutrition, supplements, bowel movements, the lot!! How not to become 'musclebound'.

I can analyse your golf swing and stance. I can evaluate your posture and almost any activity involving habitual usage and the mechanical tension patterns which can arise which restrict the activity, thus hampering performance.

What is Sports massage, remedial massage and manual therapy?

Within the physical therapy profession, manual therapy is defined as a clinical approach utilizing skilled, specific hands-on techniques, including but not limited to manipulation/mobilization, used by the physical therapist to diagnose and treat soft tissues and joint structures for the purpose of modulating pain; increasing range of motion; reducing or eliminating soft tissue inflammation; inducing relaxation; improving contractile and non-contractile tissue repair, extensibility, and/or stability; facilitating movement; and improving function.

Irwin Korr Phd. (1978) described manual therapy as the "Application of an accurately determined and specifically directed manual force to the body, in order to improve mobility in areas that are restricted; in joints, in connective tissues or in skeletal muscles."

  • Manual therapy, manipulative therapy, or manual & manipulative therapy encompasses the treatment of health ailments of various etiologies through 'hands-on', physical intervention.
  • Any techniques used to assist an athlete to train or perform, but especially Swedish massage or joint movement, relaxation and mobilization techniques. See also Massage
  • Deep tissue for major aches and sport injuries, using knuckles, elbows and fists.
  • uses techniques that are similar to Swedish and deep tissue, but are specially adapted to deal with the effects of athletic performance on the body and the needs of athletes regarding training, performing, and recovery from injury.
  • Massage techniques for athletes. These techniques are aimed at either preparing the muscles and joints for athletic activity or assisting in recovery from the stress and strain associated with sports activity.
  • Sports massage is designed to enhance athletic performance and recovery. A sport-specific and vigorous massage that includes stretching, friction, and range of motion techniques.
  • A deep tissue massage - often around the joints - for treating specific muscle groups.
  • A form of massage which utilizes specific strokes and stretches to help obtain maximum performance and physical conditioning with less chance of injury or pain. It increases power, endurance, and flexibility both before and after an event or workout.
  • Sports massage is applied to athletes to help them train and perform free of pain and injuries. Massage therapists blend classic Swedish strokes with such methods as compression, pressure-point therapy, cross-fibre friction, joint mobilization, hydrotherapy and cryotherapy (ice massage) to meet ...
  • A form of massage therapy designed for athletes. It's more vigorous than a Swedish Massage.
  • Sports Massage is a special form of massage and is typically used before, during, and after athletic events. ...
  • is a type of massage designed for highly active people who engage in athletics. Engaging in sports is harsh on the body and can often lead to injuries in both the short and long term. ...
  • It is designed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion.
  • Remedial massage is a fairly gentle, soothing type of massage designed to relieve general tension.

My treatment methods include deep massage of muscles and connective tissues. I also use manipulation and stretching of joints through precise passive stretching techniques. This reduces muscle spasm, increases mobility and creates a healthier state in which damaged tissues can heal more efficiently. My methods are tailored to take into account the differences between each persons’ condition and sensitivity.

Myo-articulation. This reverses deep tension patterns swiftly. It is particularly effective when applied to the forearm muscles in cases of RSI and hand/elbow injuries.

For example, if there is carpal bone derangement of the wrist present, I can very specifically locate and ‘undo’ adhesions and re-align these delicate little bones of the wrist. I will ‘track’ the tension patterns along the arm and identify shoulder, ribcage and neck involvement. These I will release using a variety of techniques such as articulation, massage and manipulation where necessary.

Long-lever articulation is a method of stretching the muscles and ligaments. It can also be used to mobilise a specific joint. It is often similar to having your Yoga done for you. It is entirely passive on the part of the patient. It can be applied equally to the neck as it can to the hip joint.

Micro-massage is applied as a pressure point. It is a very precise pressure, accurate to a couple of millimetres. I find the deep points which will release the soft tissue in trouble by feeling my way in to the areas in pain or deep tension and spasm. The body is clay, hard and soft. It is via this sense that we find and resolve physical problems.

Micro-articulation is applied by moving or stretching the muscle beneath a pressure point.

Restoring the symmetry of the spine and ribcage whilst increasing the flexibility of rigid areas is essential for long term health. Trauma patterns remain for life, the body takes a ‘snapshot of the aftermath of distortions that the body goes through by ‘freezing’ the traumatised areas. Where these compensations are demanded in areas which are resistant, the pattern will lock in to that area. ( see Lumbar article).

Spinal manipulation is a generally painless method of suddenly and accurately 'gapping' the adhered areas of facet joints where they most likely to be limiting the range of motion of those joints. It is a highly skilled ability which involves many hundreds of hours of development, even after you have graduated. Like any great skill such as playing the piano, effectiveness lies in the subtlety and precision of such manoeuvres. The 'pop' or 'crack' of joints is of great benefit to the joint, in that it restores a normal range of motion to it.

Following extensive research I have developed 'Enhanced Cranial Technique'. This particular approach is used where there has been trauma to the cranium. Where there is some distortion in cranial symmetry and reduction in the elastance co-efficient of the cranium there is often an aftermath, sometimes for life, of under-performance of the brain, mind and emotions. Directly blows to the head can impact the sutures which run between the cranial bones, this in turn can produce premature fusion of the sutures of the skull. This can raise the average intracranial pressure both as an immediate aftermath of trauma and over a long period of time. As a result the brain stem control and activation system which modulate the brains' activation levels generally responds with a high adrenaline tendency. The sufferer may feel 'fuzzy-headed' or have an inability to concentrate, or to be agitated for no real reason. Children and adults become irritable, emotionally volatile. Learning difficulties in children and adults will often result. (see ICP article).

Abdominal congestion leads to conditions such as poor digestion and bowel function as well as menstrual difficulties. Abdominal de-congestion massage techniques can help greatly in such cases.

Incorrect breathing patterns can also be corrected through treatment and education. Such patterns have a harmful effect on the posture as well as on general health. (see voice article)

Tailored exercises are given when areas of muscle function are weak and wasting, or where a condition needs to regain co-ordination. I also educate patients with regard to postural, ergonomic and life style factors.
