We played guitar, drank tea, talked about life and death.
George was a very kind man who I still miss dearly.
I gave him general maintenance for ten years, mostly doing home visits.
This man was very sensitive and yet remained a bloke.
He once remarked that he was just a very lucky lad.
One of his favourite lines was from a Monty Python episode: Lend us a fiver!! he would shout in a Glaswegian accent, then giggle infectiously. He was a supporter of my wifes work and bought many pieces of hers. She in turn made him many presents such as a meditation cushion as well as velvet covers for his ukeleles.
I would sometimes get a call to come over for some emergency or other such as the day when Winston, his guard dog, a Yorkshire Terrier went on the run across the fields. Winston arrived home before we did.
Once I had to treat his stiff neck on the floor of his dressing room at the Albert Hall.
That particular concert was the best I have ever, ever been to.... an exultaton of music itself, most sublime and transcending.
He treated me and my family with such trust and intimacy, only now do I realise this.
He was my only friend in Henley for all the years I was living there.
The thought of the attack in his home still makes my guts turn over.
I know that this was what led to his death.
I first met Olivia when she came to see me about a jaw problem. She must have been impressed because she soon sent George to see me. She liked a practical joke, such as the time when Dhani gave me an 'exploding pen' to write with, she exploded with laughter when I did a double take, jumping into the air with shock. A very kind and sensitive person with a very hard task of coping with the life she had married into. A loving Mother and philanthropist. In connection with the Romanian Angels Appeal' Olivia and my Wife arranged for around 1500 cot quilts to be made and delivered to the Romanian orphans following the Caucesco years. I gave her general maintenance for many years.
I met Dhani when he was 8 years old. Once I got a call from his dad at 3 in the morning, in a bit of a panic because Dhani had injured his wrist. Could I see him asap,'sure' I replied but where are you? He replied 'I am on top of a bloody great volcano in Maui and its bloody hot and smelly!'. He then suddenly realisid that it was the middle of the night for me and apologised profusely.
Dhani was a brilliant young musician then and is now coming into his own with his band 'The new no.2'.
David had accidents skiing and being kicked around by horses. On one occasion he had sustained a triple rib fracture from a kick, had been languishing in agony for three weeks, unable to sleep, when he suddenly remembered me. He saw me the next day and slept well that night. A lovely man of great intellect and charm. He now spends most of his time on TV living in America.
Elizabeth is an inspirer. Neck and shoulders the problem areas.
I treated her father, Buddy, got him ambulatory again and became good friends with this sweet old Gent.
She introduced me to Olivia Harrison, for which I shall be forever grateful, the pattern of events following this changed my life.
Poor Tom had a bad headache which I fixed with a neck adjustment. It was a quick session. I don't think he was expecting me to 'crack' his neck. As docile and shy as he was, it is always amazing to see him perform with such exraversion.
Joanna Lumley came to see me many years ago. She had injured her low back and was due to appear on the Wogan show. She was dreading appearing crooked on TV. I got her through it. This was the era just before she was reborn as a comedy actress. Since then she has done many splendid things. A tremendously intelligent lady and now a very succesful one.
Geoff Dyer first came for a low back problem, since then I have been his 'man' in London. Geoff describes himself as a 'travel writer'. This is a gross understatement, his books are full of surreal humour and keen observation of his own failings as a human, those same failings from which most of us suffer... worth a read.
Sheila Steafel came to see me because of strains to her hands. Her one woman show had as a finale her ripping a phone book in two. I got her through it.
James Moore was a huge influence on me. Many general maintenance sessions led us to become very close as friends. He acted as mentor and heckler combined. He strenghtened my character. He has headed the Gurdjieff movement in the UK and has written extensively on the life and cosmology of Gurdjieff.
Angela Farmer and Victor Van Kooten are my very close friends. I have been restoring their bodies for many years when they arrive in London, exhausted from their global yoga teaching regime. A rare pair of true humans.
Alaric Newcombe came for a slipped disc. I saw him through his agony, saw his bravery in the face of his professional life crumbling before him. Since then he has gone on to attain the highest degrees in Iyengar yoga.
Matthew Trusler is one of the worlds best solo violinists. He first came for a wrist problem that was threatening his career. Since then various injuries, mostly football related have made him return for more help.
Gretchen Franklin aka Ethel from East Enders had a bad knee problem that I helped her with. She was an 'old Trouper', swore a lot, bawdy, funny and very kind. A great lady.
Sydney Sheldon had the longest and heaviest arms I have ever come across. I saw he and his wife as patients whist I was still a student. General maintenance whilst he was in London.
Stuart MacRae had a neck and shoulder problem from long hours scribbling compositions sitting at a computer. He has become rather succesful, a hard task for composers.
Margaret Powell, a cellist had playing problems for which I developed a special technique for the fingertip fat pads, which in her case had grown very thin. She has been coming for general maintenance ever since.
Pauline Lowbury, a violin player, had suffered a disabling injury to her left wrist. She was in great distress being unable to play for many months prior to my treatment. She made a full recovery.
Steve Wiliams, a double bass player had a playing related back pain. This went away swiftly and he has been seeing me for regular body maintenance since then.
Anne Collis, a percussionist came with an old frozen shoulder. It took a while but I got it working again. Anne is a wonderful woman and now heads the Symphony Orchestra of London.
Alan Rusbridger, the editor of the Guardian came for a low back problem which resolved rapidly. An avid musician, he has recommended a few other musicians to see me for playing problems. Thanks Alan.
Steven Glass, a makeover artist and very lovely person came to see me in great distress with a low back problem. He has since sent many friends to me and still comes for occasional maintenance.
Helen Scott of The Three Degrees came to see me for a whiplash following a car accident when their chauffeur fell asleep at the wheel when they were on tour in the UK. She recovered swiftly and went on to complete the tour.
Anthony Marwood, a violinist, came for a low back problem. I advised him, after seeing him perform, on his sitting posture whilst performing, to which he paid diligent attention.
Duncan Brack, champion of global Green issues, formulator of treaties and instigator of constructive debate about green issues globally. Chairman of the Liberal-Democrats environmental committee. Has been coming to me for regular maintenance for many years. A committed person with whom I almost always lose the arguement.
Beverley Davison, virtuoso violinist, came for an old wrist injury which had devastated her career. I helped greatly and now she is playing like crazy again. Bless you Bev for encouraging my musical development.
Terry Bate, media mogul and his wonderful wife Janet have both being coming to see me on and off for over 15 years. They now live in Gozo where they have dominated the local broadcast system of Malta amongst many other huge achievements.
